Today's Fact

Pietro Maximoff outran everything except fatherhood: his daughter arrived with no powers at all, and fixing that became his worst idea.

QUICKSILVER'S DAUGHTER WAS BORN POWERLESS — THEN HE GAVE HER THE MISTS, AND SHE SAW EVERY FEELING AS COLOUR!
The Featured Fact

Luna Maximoff was born on the Moon in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #240 (1982), the child of Quicksilver and the Inhuman Crystal, and she made history quietly: the first child of a mutant and an Inhuman, whose two inheritances were said to cancel each other out. Luna was an ordinary human girl in a royal family of gods, weather-makers and speedsters — and her father could not leave that alone forever.

After the Decimation stripped Pietro of his speed, his desperation in Son of M (2006) curdled into theft, Terrigen Crystals, and one unforgivable shortcut: he exposed six-year-old Luna to the Terrigen Mists himself. The Mists answered. Luna woke able to see the emotions of everyone around her as coloured auras washing over their bodies — love, rage and lies all rendered in light she could read, and eventually reach in and rearrange.

The gift came with a child's lack of brakes. Luna had to wear sunglasses to dampen the constant emotional glare, her early exposures left her craving more of the Mists, and when she looked inside her grandfather Magneto and offered to lift his sadness away, he gave her the rule her father never learned: some things inside people are not yours to move. She kept the sight; the family has been teaching her the restraint ever since.

Why It's Obscure

The fastest man's slowest lesson arrived as a six-year-old who could see exactly what he felt.

1982
Born on the Moon — Fantastic Four #240 names the baby for her birthplace; Luna is royalty twice over, Inhuman on her mother's side and the Maximoff line on her father's.
Cancelled out
The powerless princess — Contemporary continuity held that mutant and Inhuman markers neutralised each other in Luna, leaving the only ordinary human at the Inhuman royal court.
Son of M
A father's shortcut — Depowered and frantic, Pietro exposes Luna to Terrigen in Son of M; her aura sight switches on, sunglasses and all, before anyone asks whether a six-year-old should carry it.
The rule
Magneto's correction — Offered a granddaughter's help with his grief, Magneto refuses and teaches the boundary Pietro skipped: feelings are not territory to occupy.
