The Featured Fact

Pietro Maximoff and his twin sister Wanda were born on Wundagore Mountain in Transia to Magda, who had fled her husband after his powers erupted violently. The birth was attended by Bova Ayrshire, a Guernsey cow the High Evolutionary had uplifted into an intelligent humanoid and employed as midwife and nursemaid to his New Men, a detail laid out in the twins' origin as recounted in Avengers Vol. 1 #134 (1975) and later retellings.

Magda named the babies Wanda and Pietro, then slipped away into a blizzard within days and was never seen again, leaving Bova holding two newborns and a staffing problem. Bova next tried to pass the twins off as the children of the Whizzer, whose wife Miss America had just died delivering a stillborn child, but the grieving hero fled Wundagore instead of accepting them.

Only after that failed placement did the High Evolutionary hand the infants to Django and Marya Maximoff, the Romani couple camped below the mountain who raised Pietro and Wanda as their own. Bova stayed on at Wundagore, later raised Jessica Drew for a time, and eventually met the adult twins again when they returned to Transia as Avengers.

Why It's Obscure

Origin summaries love arguing about who fathered the twins, yet almost nobody mentions that the person who actually delivered them had hooves in her family tree.

Wundagore

A delivery room with a demon outside — Retellings place the birth while the High Evolutionary's Knights battled the demon Chthon on the mountaintop, and baby Wanda briefly glowed with the same light as that fight.

Bova's day job

Midwife to a mountain of New Men — The High Evolutionary built Bova's role around her maternal instincts, making her caretaker for generations of his animal-uplift experiments.

Two placements failed first

Offered to the Whizzer, raised by the Maximoffs — Before the twins reached the couple whose surname they carry, Bova's attempt to give them to Robert Frank collapsed when he ran from the citadel in grief.

Full circle

She later minded Pietro's daughter — Bova went on to help look after Luna, Quicksilver's daughter, while serving with the Knights of Wundagore decades after delivering Luna's father.
