Today's Fact

Pietro Maximoff was not born at Mach 10. For most of his early career his ceiling hovered near the speed of sound — blistering by human standards, humiliating by his. The upgrade came from somebody else’s laboratory: the High Evolutionary, the armoured geneticist of Mount Wundagore, had refined a substance called Isotope E, and in Quicksilver #12 (1998) Pietro stopped waiting for permission and turned the isotope on himself.
The change was not subtle. Contemporary summaries of the issue describe every cell in his body radiating power, his eyes lit with it, while a battlefield of armoured knights and zealots suddenly moved like furniture. Where earlier boosts had merely amplified him, Isotope E rewrote the gauge entirely — later references credit the exposure with lifting his top speed toward Mach 10 and shielding his body from the friction, thin air and impact that should have killed him at those velocities.
The bill arrived as arrogance. Fresh off the dose, Pietro announced himself the true heir of his father’s movement and invited an entire enemy force to challenge him if they dared — they declined. It remains the strangest line on his résumé: the fastest man alive owes his personal best to a vial brewed by the scientist whose mountain he was born under.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone asks how fast Quicksilver is. Almost nobody asks what he took to get that fast.
