Today's Fact
Frank Castle's most famous piece of hardware is not a gun. It is a van — and it rolled out of a Spider-Man comic.
The Punisher's Battle Van first appeared in Giant-Size Spider-Man #4 (1975), by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru — the same Spider-Man line that had introduced Castle himself a year earlier. In the story, the Punisher tails kidnappers working for arms dealer Moses Magnum, whose trail leads to a lethal experimental gas.
Spider-Man figured out Castle was involved and stowed away in the back of the van, riding it straight to the Punisher's hideout. The vehicle in that first outing was no rolling fortress: it was a converted combat van, closer to a tradesman's work truck than the armored arsenal it later became.
The van kept evolving with its owner. By The Punisher Vol. 2 #15, Castle's partner Microchip had debuted a modernized Battle Van — armored, weaponized and wired with surveillance gear — turning a borrowed panel-van silhouette into the Punisher's mobile base for the decades that followed.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody remembers the skull vest's first issues. Almost nobody remembers that the war's logistics started in the back of a van in somebody else's comic.
