Today's Fact

Frank Castle has fought gods, monsters and armies; the one man he will not raise a fist against once ordered him to do it as a training exercise.

CAPTAIN AMERICA BEAT THE PUNISHER HALF SENSELESS — AND CASTLE REFUSED TO LIFT A HAND BACK!
The Featured Fact

In Civil War Vol. 1 #6 (2006), Castle finally gets his audience with the resistance. He has rescued Spider-Man, broken into the Baxter Building for Captain America's Secret Avengers, and earned a seat at the table — then Goldbug and Plunderer walk in offering to enlist, and Castle shoots both men dead on the spot, because in his arithmetic a villain volunteering is still a villain.

Steve Rogers loses his temper completely. In front of the whole hideout he beats Castle bloody, screaming at him to fight back, and the most violent man in the Marvel Universe just takes it, round after round, until the only words he offers are a refusal: not against you. Rogers throws him off the team and orders his guns burned, and Castle goes without arguing the sentence.

Punisher War Journal Vol. 2 #3 (2007) explains the scar tissue under that moment. In a Camp Lejeune flashback, a young Marine named Frank Castle is ordered by Rogers himself to strike him in training — and refuses, then pays for the refusal in ridicule from his own unit. Spider-Man, watching the Civil War beating, lands the verdict the story keeps circling: same guy, different war.

Why It's Obscure

Castle's code has exactly one exception carved into it, and the exception wears a star.

The audition
Two shots end it — Goldbug and Plunderer come to join the Secret Avengers in Civil War #6; Castle executes them mid-introduction and detonates his own welcome.
The beating
An order he won't obey — Rogers demands a fight and gets silence and a three-word creed instead — the beating stops only when Cap walks away from a man who will not defend himself.
Camp Lejeune
The first refusal — War Journal's flashback shows the refusal predates the skull by decades: ordered to hit Captain America in training, the young Castle declines and eats the consequences.
The verdict
Same guy, different war — Spider-Man's line reframes the whole scene: two soldiers built by different wars, one of whom still salutes the other in his own ruined way.
