Today's Fact
Long before Central Park, a captain at a doomed firebase was already negotiating with something in the dark.
At Firebase Valley Forge on the Cambodian border in October 1971, Captain Frank Castle commanded one of the last effective platoons in a collapsing outpost. Throughout Born Vol. 1 #1–4 (2003), by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, a voice only Castle can hear keeps pressing him about how much he loves the war he is fighting.
When a combined Viet Cong and North Vietnamese assault overran the firebase, the voice finally made its offer explicit: say yes, and Castle would survive the night and receive the endless war he privately wanted, at a price to be collected later. Surrounded, wounded and out of options, Castle answered with a single word — yes.
Castle was found the next morning standing alone among the dead, shot repeatedly yet still on his feet, the sole survivor of the massacre. Mainstream continuity absorbed that outcome when Civil War Files, an in-universe Official Handbook spin-off, recorded the Punisher as the lone survivor of the Firebase Valley Forge massacre, tying the MAX miniseries' climax to Earth-616 history.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of retellings start Castle's story with a picnic, but this four-issue prequel argues the transformation had already been bargained for in the jungle.
