THE PUNISHER VOLUNTEERED FOR HYDRA — AND SEWED ITS TENTACLES INTO HIS SKULL!
The Featured Fact

Nobody brainwashed Frank Castle in Secret Empire Vol. 1 #3 (2017). While a Cosmic Cube-rewritten Steve Rogers ruled America as Hydra's Supreme Leader, the issue closed by revealing Castle working as Hydra's enforcer of his own free will, hunting the criminal Boomerang for information on Black Widow and Maria Hill, and finishing the interrogation with two words: Hail Hydra.

Castle even rebranded for the job. The white skull on his chest sprouted Hydra tentacles, folding the organisation's octopus emblem into his own death's-head. This was not infiltration and not coercion: later accounts stressed that Castle chose the assignment, and the heroes who confronted him about it in The Punisher #224 (2018) treated the choice, not any mind control, as the unforgivable part.

His reasoning was pure Castle logic filtered through old loyalty. Frank had idolised Rogers since his Marine days and had fought beside him in the first Civil War, even refusing to fight back when Rogers beat him for murdering two villains. Offered a Hydra that promised order and executed criminals, and taking his orders from the one soldier he had always trusted, Castle signed up. The Cube had rewritten Rogers. Nobody had to rewrite Frank.

Why It's Obscure

The Cube rewrote Captain America. Castle needed no rewriting at all — just an order from the one man he had never questioned.

2017
The closing reveal — Secret Empire #3 ends with Castle standing over a bombed and beaten Boomerang, demanding what he knows about Black Widow's plans, and declaring for Hydra.
The emblem
Tentacles on the skull — Castle modified his chest skull with Hydra's tentacles for the assignment, merging his personal brand with the regime's octopus.
Free will
No Cube required — Writer Nick Spencer's account, echoed when heroes confront Castle in The Punisher #224, is that he willingly chose Hydra service; he was neither tricked nor coerced.
The motive
Loyalty to Rogers — Castle's lifelong reverence for Steve Rogers, established back in Civil War, is what Hydra's leader had to spend to buy the Punisher.
