THE PUNISHER JOINED THE THUNDERBOLTS — AND PAINTED HIS SKULL RED!
The Featured Fact

Frank Castle does not join teams, which is exactly why his shortest résumé line still startles: for one Marvel NOW! era, the Punisher took orders. In Thunderbolts vol. 2 #1 (2012), by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon, General Thaddeus Ross — the Red Hulk — recruited Castle into a deniable strike squad built to erase problems that governments wanted buried quietly.

The roster read like a parole hearing gone wrong: Elektra, Deadpool and Flash Thompson’s Agent Venom beside Castle, all killers Ross aimed at corrupt regimes and gamma monsters. Because the squad took its colours from its leader, Castle did the unthinkable to his own icon — the white skull on his chest was recoloured red for the length of the run, a uniform change fans can spot clear across a room.

It ended the only way a Castle membership could. The team’s bargain — one mission for Ross, then one personal mission each — curdled as Castle’s romance with Elektra collided with a lie about her brother, and when he walked away from the Thunderbolts he became their problem: the squad was sent to kill its own former gunman, and failed the way everyone fails at killing Frank Castle.

Why It's Obscure

Castle’s lone-wolf streak has exactly one team photo, and in it his most sacred symbol is wearing somebody else’s colour.

The Pitch
Ross sold the squad as arithmetic: dictators and monsters kept surviving heroes, so he hired the people who never left survivors. Castle signed on for targets, not friendship, and the distinction lasted about one mission.
The Exit
Most teams hand a departing member a farewell. This one drew up a plan to put him down — the sincerest compliment the Thunderbolts ever paid Frank Castle.
