Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
Frank Castle is not the name on his birth record. He was born Francis Castiglione in Queens, New York, to Mario and Louisa Castiglione, Sicilian immigrants. Steven Grant's The Punisher limited series (1986) established that the family Americanised Castiglione to Castle while Frank was still a small boy.
The longer version of the story adds a wartime chapter: after two tours, Castiglione wanted a third tour he was not entitled to take, so he re-enlisted under the shortened name Frank Castle — the alias becoming permanent. Marvel's own character history likewise introduces him as Frank Castiglione, later Castle, before the seminary, the Marines and Central Park.
Decades later the birth name resurfaced as cover: in Marvel's Punisher television era stories and tie-ins, a supposedly dead Frank hides under the name Pete Castiglione, quietly reclaiming the surname his parents gave up — including the white skull vest he wears over it, shown plainly in the gallery below.
Why It's Obscure
The most American-sounding name in Marvel was a deliberate shortening chosen by an immigrant family.
