THE PUNISHER WAS STITCHED BACK TOGETHER AS FRANKEN-CASTLE!
The Featured Fact

Frank Castle has died before — but only once did he come back in pieces, on purpose. In Dark Reign: The List — Punisher (2009), Norman Osborn sent Daken, Wolverine's son, to cross "kill Punisher" off his list. Castle fought well for a human with no healing factor — and lost completely: dismembered and decapitated, his remains dumped in a New York sewer.

The sewer is monster country. Morbius, the Living Vampire, and the Legion of Monsters — Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Manphibian, the Living Mummy — collected the pieces and stitched Castle back together as a patchwork undead brute, powered in part by a fragment of the Bloodstone. From Punisher #11 (2010), by Rick Remender & Tony Moore, the book itself was retitled: Franken-Castle.

The Legion wanted his tactical mind to defend Monster Metropolis from Hellsgaard's monster-hunters. Franken-Castle wanted one thing first: revenge on Daken, pursued to Tokyo with new superhuman strength and endurance. The era ran through Franken-Castle #17–21 (2010) before Remender restored Castle to ordinary, living, human vengeance in Punisher: In the Blood.

Why It's Obscure

Fans remember the angel era because Ennis mocked it. Franken-Castle is stranger, later, and played completely straight — Marvel's grittiest realist spent a year as a literal Frankenstein monster working for Dracula's neighbours.

2009
The List — Punisher — the death — Remender & Romita Jr.: Osborn orders the hit; Daken's healing factor outlasts Castle's arsenal and Castle ends the fight in pieces. The one opponent no amount of preparation could outlast.
2010
Punisher #11 — the rebuild — Man-Thing recovers the remains; Morbius re-composes Castle to lead the Legion's defence. "We will be responsible for creating the worst monster this world has ever known." — Morbius
#17–21
The title changes its name — The series is officially retitled Franken-Castle; the Bloodstone feeds on his rage, and the rage feeds the Bloodstone. An infinity loop with stitches.
Tokyo
Revenge, undead edition — Franken-Castle hunts Daken to Tokyo; Wolverine himself has to step in before Castle finishes his son. Even death was treated as a logistics problem.
