Today's Fact

The portal promised judgment and a brand-new life; for Betsy Braddock it delivered amnesia on an enemy's shoreline.

PSYLOCKE PUSHED HER OWN TEAM THROUGH THE SIEGE PERILOUS — AND WOKE UP ON A BEACH WITH NO NAME, NO PAST, AND THE HAND WAITING!
The Featured Fact

By 1989 the X-Men were believed dead and hiding in the Australian Outback, and Betsy Braddock kept dreaming of the Reavers coming to finish them. In Uncanny X-Men #251, trusting a vision, she telepathically nudged her remaining teammates — Havok, Colossus and Dazzler — through the Siege Perilous, Roma's mystical portal that judges each traveler and grants a new life, and then stepped through herself.

Judgment, for Betsy, meant erasure. She emerged with her memories scattered and washed ashore on an island in the South China Sea controlled by the Hand, where the assassin Matsu'o Tsurayaba's men fished her out of the surf — a powerful telepath with no name, no past, and no defenses, delivered gift-wrapped to the worst possible rescuers.

Everything that defined Psylocke for the next thirty years starts on that beach: the Hand's brainwashing, the Lady Mandarin armor, and Spiral's body-swap with the comatose Kwannon. The woman who walked out of the Outback was a British telepath in her own body; the woman the portal handed back was the first draft of a legend neither Betsy nor Kwannon had agreed to.

Why It's Obscure

Fans argue about the body-swap for decades — and skip the issue where Betsy chose the door that caused it.

Uncanny X-Men #251 (1989)
The nudge — Chris Claremont wrote Betsy steering her friends through the portal on the strength of a dream, with Havok openly wondering whether they were being pushed.
The Siege Perilous
The terms — Roma's gift judges the pure and the guilty alike; a new life is guaranteed, but nobody promised it would be a kinder one.
The South China Sea
The landing — the Marvel Database's Kwannon entry records Betsy found washed up on the Hand's island shore, her arrival a direct consequence of the portal.
Wolverine
The way back — it took a psychic duel with Logan, and a stab into his berserker psyche, to crack the Hand's conditioning and return her memories.
