Today's Fact
She had one foot off the island and a resignation in her heart — Krakoa answered by handing her its army.
Kwannon spent the Krakoan era doing other people's penance: field-leading Mister Sinister's Hellions, a squad of mutants too damaged or dangerous to roam free, in exchange for Sinister's whispered promise about her lost daughter. When that bargain curdled and the Hellions were disbanded, she was finished — she resolved to leave Krakoa altogether.
Then, in Inferno Vol. 2 #1 (2021), by Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti, the Quiet Council chose her as a Great Captain of Krakoa — one of the mutant nation's senior wartime commanders — taking the seat left empty by Gorgon's death. The assassin the Hand raised to be a weapon was now, on paper, one of the highest military authorities her people had.
She accepted, and stayed. When her old Hellions insisted on backing her up on a Captain's errand anyway, she let them — and it was Greycrow, the former Marauder who had once helped massacre the Morlocks, who finally confessed his feelings for her in Hellions Vol. 1 #18. The two began a relationship: Krakoa's strangest promotion came with its strangest romance attached.
Why It's Obscure
From Sinister's leash to the nation's top table of war — a promotion nobody, least of all Kwannon, saw coming.
