Today's Fact
The woman holding the Psylocke name today first walked into the X-Mansion in 1993 wearing somebody else's face and an accusation.
In X-Men Vol. 2 #17 (1993), a stranger arrived at the mansion with Betsy Braddock's original British face, Betsy's memories, and a flat claim: she was the genuine Elizabeth Braddock, and the Asian-bodied telepath serving with the X-Men was a fraud named Kwannon. She took the codename Revanche — French for revenge, for the reclaiming of lost territory — and she had come to take her life back at katana-point. Her psychic katana burned pink in her fist, the same signature later generations would read as pure Psylocke.
Both women were telling the truth as they understood it. Spiral had tangled the Hand assassin Kwannon and the X-Man Betsy Braddock so thoroughly — minds swapped, memories blended, even their DNA intermingled — that each carried pieces of the other. The impostor story was a lie planted by Matsu'o Tsurayaba and Lord Nyoirin, but the confusion underneath it was entirely real.
Revanche stayed, fought beside the woman she had accused, and only recovered her own name on her deathbed, when the Legacy Virus took her in X-Men Vol. 2 #31 (1994) and her memories settled back into place as Kwannon's. Decades later she returned in her own restored body, Betsy handed her the Psylocke name while the Captain Britain mantle went the other way, and the supposed impostor turned out to have been a second hero all along.
Why It's Obscure
Two women, one face each, and a codename that literally means taking your territory back.
