Today's Fact

When Betsy Braddock walked into Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #213 (1987), she was not yet an X-Man, not a ninja, and not anybody's idea of a fighter. She was a telepath guest in a borrowed pink suit of armour, alone on duty at a mansion full of wounded Morlocks, when Sabretooth came through the door hunting the patients in the infirmary during the Mutant Massacre.
Betsy did the arithmetic instantly: she could not beat him, so she made herself the bait. She taunted Sabretooth into chasing her through the mansion and up onto the roof, away from the injured, absorbing a savaged arm and buying minutes with her own body until Storm, Wolverine and the others arrived. Then, while Wolverine's claws held the killer's full attention, she slipped past his psionic shields and tore the Marauders' secrets straight out of his mind, learning who had sent him.
It was Wolverine — the teammate least impressed by credentials — who argued she had proved herself, and Storm agreed on the spot. Betsy Braddock was invited to join the X-Men at the end of the issue, years before the Hand, the body swap and the psychic knife made her famous as a warrior. Her membership card was earned as a decoy who refused to run anywhere but toward the danger and away from the wounded.
Why It's Obscure
The most famous ninja in X-Men history got the job by losing a fight on purpose — slowly, loudly, and in the opposite direction from the hospital beds.
