PSYLOCKE DIED BEFORE SHE WAS PSYLOCKE — THE LEGACY VIRUS KILLED KWANNON IN BETSY BRADDOCK'S BODY!
The Featured Fact

The woman the X-Men now call Psylocke was born Kwannon, a Hand assassin whose mind was mingled with Betsy Braddock’s when the sorceress Spiral swapped the two women between bodies. Kwannon woke in Betsy’s original British body sincerely believing she was Betsy, took the codename Revanche, marched into the X-Mansion to denounce Psylocke as the impostor — and then, uncomfortably, joined the team herself.

On a mission to an island colony of Legacy Virus victims, Revanche revealed she was infected herself. The mutant-killing virus did one strange mercy as it burned through her: it amplified her telepathy, and the rising power cut through the fog Spiral had left in her head. For the first time since the swap, Kwannon knew with certainty who she was — and who she was not.

She refused to die slowly in a laboratory. Revanche flew home to Japan, found her former lover Matsu’o Tsurayaba, and asked him to end her life swiftly, on her own terms, rather than let the disease take her. He complied, driving a tantō into her heart; her dying telepathic imprint, passed through Matsu’o afterwards, scrubbed Kwannon’s fractured memories out of Betsy’s mind and restored her peace. The death came in X-Men Vol. 2 #31 (1994), by Fabian Nicieza and Andy Kubert — a quarter-century before resurrection returned Kwannon to her own body and she claimed the Psylocke name for herself.

Why It's Obscure

Two women, two bodies, one name between them — and a virus that told the truth while it killed her.

1993
X-Men Vol. 2 #17 — Revanche debuts, a second Betsy Braddock with bionic eyes and a psychic katana, insisting the X-Men’s Psylocke is the fake.
The mingling
Spiral cheated the swap — hired to save Kwannon, Spiral blended the women’s minds and even their DNA, leaving each carrying pieces of the other.
The virus
Clarity at a price — the Legacy Virus boosted Revanche’s telepathy as it killed her, and the surge burned away her false memories first.
The request
A death on her terms — Kwannon asked Matsu’o for a swift, honourable end in Japan rather than a lingering death as a victim of disease.
The echo
X-Men Vol. 2 #32 (1994) — her imprinted psionic energy, released by Matsu’o, gives Betsy back her own undivided mind; Kwannon’s epitaph is left by Psylocke and Matsu’o together.
