PSYLOCKE STARTED AS A PRECOG PILOT-SPY — NO NINJA, NO PSI-BLADE, JUST VISIONS!

The Featured Fact

Elizabeth 'Betsy' Braddock did not debut with a psychic knife. Created by Chris Claremont in Captain Britain #8 (1976), Brian Braddock's twin sister was a charter pilot and model — blonde hair dyed purple to stand out — whose first mutant gift was unruly precognition: disruptive flashes of the future she could not control, one of which nearly crashed a plane she was flying.

Her visions drew the attention of S.T.R.I.K.E., Britain's answer to S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Matthew recruited her into its fledgling Psi Division, where she trained her precognition until, as later accounts put it, nobody could keep secrets from her. Only afterwards did her powers grow into full telepathy — the butterfly-signature psychic who would join the X-Men.

That makes the famous Psylocke arsenal — psi-blade, telekinesis, ninja training — almost entirely a later accretion. The original Betsy was a spy who saw tomorrow coming and a pilot who had to land the plane anyway. When she later joined the X-Men she deliberately set the precognition aside to develop her telepathy, and the visions quietly faded from her stories.

Why It's Obscure

Psylocke means a psychic knife and ninja training to most readers. The original Betsy Braddock had neither — she was a charter pilot whose only power was seeing what came next, and she set even that aside when she joined the X-Men.

1976

Captain Britain #8 — first appearance — Betsy debuts as Captain Britain's sister, a pilot whose precognitive flashes are ill-defined and mystical in flavour. No sword. No swimsuit. A twin with homework.

Pilot

Charter pilot, then model — By college Betsy was flying charters; she dyed her blonde hair purple for modelling. The purple started as a fashion decision, not a mutation.

S.T.R.I.K.E.

The Psi Division — Recruited by Agent Matthew, Betsy becomes a government psychic and lover of fellow psi Tom Lennox, and is sent to infiltrate the Hellfire Club she inherited membership of. Warned off by Tessa — Sage — for her own safety.

Shift

From precog to telepath — With the X-Men, Betsy focused on telepathy and let precognition lapse. Writers forgot it; in-story, she chose the sharper weapon.
