Psylocke existed for a decade before the X-Men ever met her!
The Featured Fact

Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock debuted in Captain Britain #8 (December 1976) — a Marvel UK book, created by Chris Claremont & Herb Trimpe — as the blonde, precognitive twin sister of Brian Braddock, Captain Britain. Nearly ten years before she ever met the X-Men, she was a supporting character in her brother's book: a charter pilot, then a fashion model, then an agent of S.T.R.I.K.E.'s Psi-Division — Britain's S.H.I.E.L.D. counterpart.

And here's the kicker: the ninja had nothing to do with her for that entire first decade. Original Betsy was a telepath who started with minor precognitive flashes — no martial arts, no purple-hair swagger, and certainly no psychic knife. That whole look didn't arrive until the 1989 Claremont/Jim Lee revamp. For ten years, "Psylocke's" predecessor was a proper British psychic who solved problems by reading minds, not by plunging psionic daggers into them.

She even beat her brother to a superhero mantle once: when Brian stepped down, Betsy briefly became Captain Britain herself, wearing a power-suit that granted her flight and super-strength — until the villain Slaymaster gouged her eyes out. Kidnapped afterward by the interdimensional tyrant Mojo, she got bionic camera-eyes and was rebranded as "Psylocke" for his twisted TV broadcasts. Her American debut didn't come until New Mutants Annual #2 (October 1986) — the New Mutants rescued her, and the X-Men finally got their hands on the character she'd been building for a decade.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows the ninja. Almost nobody knows she was a British psychic debutante in a sister-imprint comic a full decade earlier — because most of that material was published by Marvel UK, outside the X-Men line entirely.

1976
Captain Britain #8 (Marvel UK) — Betsy Braddock's first appearance, created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe. She's introduced as Captain Britain's twin sister, blonde, with undefined psychic abilities. Not an X-Men book. Not an American book.
The résumé
Before capes: charter pilot, then fashion model, then agent in S.T.R.I.K.E.'s Psi-Division (Special Tactical Reserve for International Key Emergencies — the UK's S.H.I.E.L.D.). Her S.T.R.I.K.E. debut even gave her the purple hair. Psychic, not a ninja.
1986
Captain Britain vol. 2 #2 — Betsy takes over as Captain Britain from her brother, with a power-suit granting flight and super-strength. Shortly after, Slaymaster blinds her — gouges her eyes out entirely. Mojo then replaces her eyes with bionic recorders and christens her "Psylocke."
1986
New Mutants Annual #2 — her American debut, rescued by the New Mutants and her brother. Ten years after her first appearance, she finally enters the X-Men's world — and three years later the ninja revamp erases everything casual readers knew about her.
