Today's Fact

The world's greatest telepath could read any mind on Earth — except, apparently, the family secret sitting in his own past.

XAVIER HAD A SON FOR NEARLY TWENTY YEARS — AND ONLY LEARNED IT WHEN THE BOY'S MIND STARTED SWALLOWING PEOPLE!
The Featured Fact

Working in Haifa, Israel, a young Charles Xavier used his telepathy to reach Gabrielle Haller, a Holocaust survivor locked in catatonia, and the two fell in love. Gabrielle later realised she was pregnant — and deliberately never told him, unsure she could trust feelings formed around a man who could touch her mind. She raised their son, David Haller, in secret.

David's powers erupted during a terrorist attack in Paris that killed his stepfather; the trauma fractured the boy's mind, and he absorbed the psyche of one of the attackers, Jemail Karami. Left catatonic, David was taken to Moira MacTaggert on Muir Island, where his uncontrolled gifts began pulling other people's astral selves inside his head.

When Xavier arrived to help in The New Mutants Vol. 1 #26–28 (1985), by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, he entered David's mindscape alongside the New Mutants — and only then discovered the patient was his own son. Inside that mind, David's splintered personalities announced themselves with a biblical flourish: 'My name is Legion, for we are many.'

Why It's Obscure

A love affair in Haifa, a secret kept for two decades, and a first meeting conducted inside a collapsing mind.

Haifa
Where it began — Xavier met Gabrielle Haller while she was his patient in Israel; their romance, first sketched in Uncanny X-Men #161, ended before she knew she was pregnant.
The secret
Her choice, not his failure — Gabrielle concealed David's existence on purpose, doubting whether her feelings for a telepath had ever been entirely her own.
Muir Island
The family reunion venue — Moira MacTaggert finally persuaded Gabrielle that only Xavier could help the catatonic teenager whose mind kept absorbing bystanders.
Legion
A name with a warning in it — each of David's personalities carries a different power, which is how one boy became an omega-level crowd.
