Today's Fact
Death by Phoenix fire was not the end of Charles Xavier; it was the start of a five-year tenancy on the Astral Plane.
Charles Xavier died in Avengers vs. X-Men (2012) when a Phoenix-possessed Cyclops killed him, yet his mind did not move on. His psychic consciousness was caught and chained on the Astral Plane by the Shadow King, who had been waiting for exactly that kind of prisoner. There the two telepaths fought a grinding war of wills that, by Astral Plane time, stretched across centuries.
The escape route arrived wearing a white mask. When Psylocke's team crossed over to fight the Shadow King in Astonishing X-Men Vol. 4 #1–6 (2017), Fantomex — the Weapon Plus thief who owed the world a great deal — quietly struck a bargain with the prisoner. Fantomex would stay behind, and Xavier would go home in the only vessel on offer: Fantomex's own young, able-bodied form.
So the founder of the X-Men returned to life standing upright in another man's body, with hair, a heartbeat that was not his, and a new name stripped down to a single letter. He asked his students to call him X, ditched the professorial distance for a far more ruthless playbook, and spent the A Man Called X arc proving that resurrection had sharpened him rather than softened him.
Why It's Obscure
Most resurrections hand a hero his old life back; this one handed Xavier somebody else's.

The borrowed body is on full display: Fantomex stands in his white-and-black costume, and Xavier walks upright through a crowd wearing the Cerebro helmet.
