XAVIER SECRETLY BACKED UP EVERY MUTANT'S MIND — SO DEATH ITSELF BECAME REVERSIBLE!
The Featured Fact

Cerebro was never only a mutant detector. As revealed in House of X Vol. 1 #5 (2019), Charles Xavier quietly turned it into an archive of souls: working through Cerebro, he copied the mind — the essence, the anima — of every mutant he could reach, storing the backups in a set of Cerebro cradles built for him by the inventor Forge, whose upgraded design is laid out in Powers of X Vol. 1 #5 (2019).

The point of the archive was resurrection. On Krakoa, five mutants called the Five could grow a fresh, adult body from stored DNA, but a body alone comes back empty. Xavier's stored copy supplied the missing person: he would download the dead mutant's recorded mind into the new husk, memories and personality intact up to the moment of the last backup, and the return was staged as a public miracle with the resurrected crawling from their pods at his feet.

Nobody had asked the copied for permission. The backups were refreshed on a rolling basis for the entire mutant population, a census of consciousnesses kept without consent, and the system carried a hard flaw Xavier accepted in silence: anything a mutant lived after their most recent backup was gone forever if they died before the next one. Krakoa's promise that no mutant need ever die again rested on one man's private recordings of everybody else's inner life.

Why It's Obscure

The school's famous machine had a second job nobody was told about: filing a copy of every mutant mind against the day its owner died.

The cradles
Five vaults for minds — Xavier commissioned Forge to build Cerebro storage cradles — a main unit and backups — holding copied mutant minds on Shi'ar logic diamonds.
The Five
Bodies on demand — Krakoa's Five grew replacement bodies from Mr. Sinister's DNA library, but only Xavier's archives could put the original person back inside one.
Weekly copies
A rolling census — The data pages of House of X describe the backups being refreshed again and again for every mutant, a standing record nobody had consented to give.
The gap
Death keeps the change — A resurrected mutant returns only as current as their last backup, so the final days of a life lived between copies are permanently lost.
