AN ALIEN NAMED LUCIFER CRIPPLED HIM!
The Featured Fact

Professor X was not crippled by Magneto, a mutant, or a stray bullet. He lost the use of his legs to an alien advance scout named Lucifer — Agent One of the Quist (the Arcane), sent to prepare Earth for conquest by the will-deadening machine Dominus. The full flashback is in X-Men #20 (1966); Lucifer had debuted in X-Men #9 (1965).

The young, still-walking Xavier — a gifted athlete who had served in Korea — investigated a walled city in Tibet whose people lived under a tyrant's mental control. Sensing alien machinery, he rallied the townsfolk in revolt and wrecked Lucifer's test site. As the alien fled on his masters' orders, he triggered a defense mechanism: a massive stone block dropped on Xavier, crushing his legs.

The injury did more than end Xavier's walking years — it aimed his life. He founded the X-Men specifically as a precaution against Lucifer's return, a standing defense for the day the Quist came back to finish the invasion. The school, the team, the dream: all of it starts with one alien dropping one rock in Tibet.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows the wheelchair. Almost nobody knows who put him in it — not a mutant at all, but an alien scout for an invasion that never came.

1965
X-Men #9 (Lee & Kirby) — Lucifer debuts; Xavier tells the X-Men this is the being responsible for his paralysis, holding a continent-killing bomb wired to his own heartbeat.
1966
X-Men #20 — the flashback: Tibet, a mind-controlled walled city, a revolt — and a stone slab dropped on Xavier's legs as Lucifer escapes.
The Quist
Lucifer is Agent One of the Arcane, from Quistalium. His job: tune the transmitter Dominus to humanity so a whole planet could be made to submit. Xavier ruined a perfect conquest record.
The consequence
Recovering, Xavier builds the school and the X-Men as a precaution for Lucifer's return. The dream began as an anti-invasion plan.
