THE MAN WHO DIED WASN'T HIM!
The Featured Fact

In X-Men #42 (1968), Professor X died — crushed under rubble alongside the sub-human Grotesk. The X-Men mourned, broke up, and went their separate ways. It was one of the first major deaths in Marvel history, and it stuck for over a year of stories.

It was a lie. X-Men #65 (1969) revealed the dead man was Changeling — Kevin Sidney, a reformed villain with a terminal illness and only months to live, who wanted to atone. Xavier recruited him as a stand-in, lent him a portion of his telepathic powers to sell the disguise, and went into hiding — while only Jean Grey knew the secret.

Why hide? Xavier was preparing a defense against the alien Z'Nox, who were coming to invade Earth. When he resurfaced, he used his vast telepathic powers — plus a psychic gestalt of Earth's compassionate and brave — to drive the Z'Nox off. He had fooled his enemies and his own students at the same time.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows Xavier dies a lot. Almost nobody knows his very first death was someone else's — a dying villain doing penance in his chair.

1969
X-Men #65 — the reveal, and the reason: Xavier spent his hidden months preparing for the Z'Nox invasion, then turned a planet's compassion into a psychic beam that drove them off.
