Today's Fact
Stripped of her magnetism on M-Day, Lorna Dane took the only offer on the table — and it came with armor and a new name.
When the Scarlet Witch's M-Day spell erased most mutant powers, Lorna Dane lost her magnetism — and hid the loss while insisting it had to be psychological. Her search for a cure led her to a strange alien creature called Daap, which seized her mid-flight and delivered her, in the 'Blood of Apocalypse' arc of X-Men Vol. 2 #182–187 (2006), straight to the one being eager to help: Apocalypse.
Apocalypse remade her as Pestilence, a Horseman of his new order. Celestial technology rebuilt her ruined nervous system, and her altered body could now ingest living pathogens — samples of SARS, cholera, anthrax and bubonic plague taken in a break-in at the World Health Organization — cultivate them inside herself, and exhale them combined as a single meta-plague meant to cull ninety percent of humanity.
Lorna eventually broke his conditioning and was recovered by Havok and the X-Men. The twist her teammates only confirmed years later, in X-Men: Legacy #259, is that the Horseman machinery had done its job too well: the nanotechnology slowly regrew her natural X-gene, so the powers Apocalypse had faked for her became genuinely hers again.
Why It's Obscure
The Horseman roster is famous for Archangel — almost nobody remembers the X-Man who carried the plague slot in 2006.
