Today's Fact
She kissed Havok goodbye at the airport, drove home alone — and the woman who walked back through the door was not Lorna Dane at all.
In Uncanny X-Men #219 (1987), Lorna Dane saw her partner Havok off at Albuquerque airport and drove home to New Mexico — and on the way, the bodiless psionic Marauder Malice slipped inside her. Malice has no body of her own; she survives by possessing other people. This time Mister Sinister had sent her deliberately, and Lorna was the perfect host: Malice's energy matrix proved so compatible with Lorna's magnetic powers that the two became grafted together, with Lorna's own consciousness trapped inside her body while Malice drove it.
Wearing Lorna, Malice did not hide — she took command. She beat the Marauders sent to kill Polaris, announced herself as their new leader, and led them against the X-Men, even hunting Cyclops' wife Madelyne Pryor and forcing Havok to try to kill the woman he loved. Worse, the possession turned out to be a trap for the possessor: in Uncanny X-Men #239, Sinister revealed the bond was permanent. Malice could not leave Lorna even if she wanted to — the choker at Lorna's throat marked a host she was now welded to.
Only Sinister's apparent death during Inferno loosened the grip. In Uncanny X-Men #249 (1989), Lorna briefly fought her way back to the surface and phoned the X-Men in Australia for help — too late. She fell into the hands of Zaladane, the Savage Land priestess who claimed to be her half-sister, and in Uncanny X-Men #250 Zaladane used the High Evolutionary's machinery to steal Lorna's magnetic powers for herself. The transfer finally tore Malice out of her — freedom, after roughly two years, at the price of the very powers that had made Lorna a target.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of heroes get mind-controlled for an issue. Lorna lost her own body for two years of publication — and her possessor could not have left if she tried.
