ODIN LED THE FIRST AVENGERS A MILLION YEARS AGO — AND NEARLY MARRIED THE PHOENIX FORCE!
The Featured Fact

Long before Asgard meddled in modern heroics, a younger Odin took a field command on primitive Earth. In 1,000,000 B.C. he led a band of legacy-powered champions — remembered now as the Stone Age Avengers — raised by the mutant psychic Firehair, host of the Phoenix Force, to shield a defenseless planet from gods, monsters and worse.

Odin’s service came with an attachment he never outgrew: he and Lady Phoenix fought side by side for ages and became lovers, and the All-Father eventually decided gratitude and desire entitled him to a wedding. In Avengers 1,000,000 B.C. #1 (2022) the team is lured to Asgard for a surprise ceremony where Odin proposes on the spot — without ever having asked — and Phoenix very nearly abandons Earth altogether in fury at the presumption.

The founding itself was revealed in Marvel Legacy Vol. 1 #1 (2017), by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić. Phoenix stayed, the ancient team endured a while longer, and her bond with Odin echoed forward in the strangest way: working with the goddess Gaea, she helped arrange the birth of the child who would grow up to be Thor — and, having breathed life back into the assassinated infant, has regarded the thunder god as her own son ever since.

Why It's Obscure

The Avengers did not begin in Manhattan; they began around a Stone Age fire, with a one-eyed god making romantic decisions for the whole planet.

2017
Marvel Legacy #1 — Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić unveil Odin, Phoenix, Agamotto, the first Black Panther, Ghost Rider, Iron Fist and Starbrand as Earth’s original team.
The founder
Firehair chose them — the Phoenix host, raised by wolves and rescued mutants, assembled the Avengers of her age and recruited Odin herself.
The romance
Centuries together — Odin’s own fond recollections admit he adventured beside Lady Phoenix long after their mortal teammates had died.
The proposal
A wedding ambush — Odin sprang a marriage ceremony on Phoenix in Asgard; her rage at being treated as a prize nearly ended the team and the world’s protection with it.
The legacy
A second mother for Thor — Phoenix conspired with Gaea over Thor’s birth and revived the murdered newborn, which is why the cosmic fire still calls him her son.
