Today's Fact
Every bamf is a round trip through another world — Kurt just makes the journey too fast to notice he took it.
Nightcrawler never actually disappears. Each teleport displaces Kurt Wagner into the Brimstone Dimension, moves him through it, and drops him back into our world at a point he has chosen — a crossing so fast that for years he was not consciously aware of making it, steering by an unconscious, natural direction-finding sense. The trigger is biochemical and biophysical, not psionic, and the evidence is on your nose: the smoke and rotten-egg stench at every arrival are that dimension’s atmosphere leaking through the aperture, while the BAMF itself is air rushing in to fill the space he vacated.
Direction matters down there. Travelling along Earth’s magnetic lines of force is easier than cutting across them, so under optimal conditions Kurt can manage roughly three miles north-to-south but only about two miles east-to-west — and that is carrying just himself, his costume and a modest extra mass. Push the distance or the load and the hops exhaust him; lose concentration mid-crossing and he risks reappearing inside something solid.
The Brimstone Dimension is not empty real estate. It is the exile realm of Azazel and his Neyaphem, the ancient mutant strain whose claim on Kurt’s story the X-Men have fought over for decades. Every time the fuzzy elf bamfs across a battlefield, he is cutting through the prison yard of the being once presented as his father — usually too quickly to wave.
Why It's Obscure
The mechanics of the bamf are stranger than the bamf: a hidden commute, a magnetic compass, and a landlord nobody visits on purpose.
