Today's Fact
The demon was a decoy: Kurt Wagner was conceived on purpose, by two women who then paid a telepath to make them forget him.
For two decades the record said Nightcrawler was the son of the shapeshifter Mystique and the demon-like mutant Azazel. X-Men Blue: Origins Vol. 1 #1 (2023) replaced that story with the one Chris Claremont had wanted to print in the 1980s: Mystique's lover Destiny, living incognito as a maid in the Wagner household, wished for a child, and Mystique — whose gift rewrites her body down to the genetic level — shifted into a man and fathered him. Destiny carried and delivered the blue baby herself.
Azazel's paternity was stagecraft. Destiny, who sees the future, arranged for the ancient mutant to believe Kurt was his blood, because a supposed heir was a lever she could pull against him for years. Even the familiar flashbacks of a pregnant Mystique were theatre: she mimicked a pregnancy while the real mother served drinks in the same house, under the nose of Baron Christian Wagner.
The forgetting was also arranged. To protect the child and themselves, Mystique and Destiny later asked Professor Xavier to erase the truth from their own minds, which is why mother and son circled each other as strangers and enemies for decades of publication. When the buried memory finally resurfaced in 2023, Kurt learned he had not been an accident, a weapon or a demon's leavings — he was the planned child of two people who loved each other, hidden so thoroughly that even they lost him.
Why It's Obscure
Claremont pitched this parentage in the eighties and was refused; it took forty years and a one-shot to make his draft the canon.

Kurt's indigo skin, pointed ears and glowing yellow eyes are plain in both portraits, and his parents stand together in the third frame.
