NIGHTCRAWLER JOINED THE X-MEN MINUTES AFTER ACCIDENTALLY BREAKING HIS OWN FOSTER BROTHER'S NECK!
The Featured Fact

The first time readers ever saw Kurt Wagner, in Giant-Size X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (1975), he was running for his life through the German village of Winzeldorf, hunted by a torch-carrying mob that believed he had murdered children. The charge had the wrong brother attached to it: the killings were the work of Stefan Szardos, the foster brother Kurt had grown up beside in Margali Szardos's circus.

Years earlier the two boys had made a grim childhood pact. Stefan, who feared the sorcery running in the Szardos bloodline could corrupt him, made Kurt swear to stop him if he ever turned evil and took an innocent life. When Kurt found Stefan in the woods outside Winzeldorf surrounded by his victims, and Stefan moved on one child who was still living, Kurt threw himself at his brother to hold him back — and broke Stefan's neck by accident in the struggle.

The villagers who found Kurt beside the bodies drew the obvious conclusion from his blue skin and barbed tail, and the mob formed within the hour. Professor Charles Xavier froze the crowd psychically, offered the fugitive a place with a brand-new team of X-Men he was assembling, and Kurt accepted on the spot. His life as a superhero began as a rescue from his own murder trial by torchlight.

Why It's Obscure

He arrived in comics as a murder suspect, and the man he had actually killed was the brother he had sworn a childhood oath to stop.

1975
The Winzeldorf mob — Giant-Size X-Men #1 opens on Kurt fleeing villagers who blame the circus performer's demonic appearance for a string of child murders he did not commit.
The pact
An oath between boys — Stefan Szardos, fearing his family's magic would rot him from inside, extracted Kurt's promise to end him if he ever took an innocent life.
The fight
A rescue that killed — Kurt grappled with Stefan to save a surviving child and snapped his brother's neck unintentionally, fulfilling the oath in the worst possible way.
The rescue
Xavier stops the torches — Professor X psychically paralysed the mob mid-hunt and recruited Kurt for his new X-Men, turning an accused fugitive into a founding member of the second generation.
