Today's Fact

S.H.I.E.L.D. built a spare Fury. His brother stole it, his enemy renamed it, and it spent decades becoming the one opponent who thinks exactly like him.

NICK FURY'S OWN DECOY TOOK HIS MEMORIES, HIS FACE AND A NEW NAME — MAX FURY BECAME THE VILLAIN FURY COULD NOT BURY!

The Featured FactThe machine began as a prototype: an advanced Life Model Decoy of Nick Fury, less a robot than a synthetic man. In the late 1970s, Fury’s brother Jake Fury — the villain Scorpio — stole the prototype and used the reality-bending Zodiac Key to reprogram it with the real Fury’s complete memories. The decoy woke up sincerely believing it was Nick Fury, and served Scorpio’s android Zodiac scheme against the Defenders in Defenders Vol. 1 #44–51 (1977).

S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually recovered its runaway spare, and the genuine Fury made the coldest call of his career: a copy carrying all of his memories was too dangerous to shelve, so he ordered it deactivated and incinerated, and watched a body burn. He was watching a substitute. John Steele, a World War II comrade turned operative of the Shadow Council, had swapped the prototype out and smuggled it off the Helicarrier — and gave the nameless machine the first thing that was ever truly its own: a name. Max.

As Max Fury, formally introduced in Secret Avengers Vol. 1 #5 (2010), the decoy became a major power in his own right: a Shadow Council field leader against Steve Rogers’s Secret Avengers, and later the organisation’s usurper, using its fortune to bankroll the outlaw nation of Bagalia and assemble a new Masters of Evil. Every Fury decoy story since lives in this one’s shadow: the copy that refused to stay a copy.

Why It's Obscure

Decoys are supposed to die quietly in their owner’s place. This one outlived several owners, acquired a first name from an enemy, and invoiced the world for its own nation-state.

1977
The theft — Scorpio steals the prototype in the Defenders run and pours his brother’s memories into it with the Zodiac Key; the copy’s identity crisis is immediate and total.
THE SWAP
An empty furnace — Fury attends his decoy’s incineration and leaves satisfied. Steele’s shell game means the ashes belong to a lesser machine.
THE NAME
‘Max’ — Steele’s gift is the smallest item in the story and the most consequential: a man with someone else’s memories finally owns one word of his own.
BAGALIA
The copy, governing — Max seizes the Shadow Council’s money, funds a sovereign den of villains, and staffs a Masters of Evil: Fury’s instincts, minus Fury’s leash.
