Today's Fact

A brainwashed Frank Castle, a funeral full of heroes, and a corpse that fooled everyone — because it was built to.

THE PUNISHER KILLED NICK FURY IN 1995 — AND THE BODY IN THE ARLINGTON COFFIN TURNED OUT TO BE A SECRET LIFE MODEL DECOY!
The Featured Fact

In the 1995 Marvel Edge crossover Over the Edge, the villain Spook had the Punisher drugged and conditioned to believe that Nick Fury had ordered the Central Park massacre that killed Castle's family. Castle escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, gunned down Fury's decoys, and finally shot Fury himself in the back in Double Edge: Omega #1 (1995).

Fury was mourned as genuinely dead: he received a hero's funeral and burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Castle landed on death row for the murder, and Fury's son Mikel swore vengeance. The death stood as the status quo for roughly three years of publication.

Then, in Fury / Agent 13 #1–2 (1998), a returned Sharon Carter dug into the case and discovered the buried 'Fury' was a highly advanced Life Model Decoy — a one-off model built by Tony Stark so convincing that it had fooled mourners, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Castle alike. The real Fury had been in hiding the entire time.

Why It's Obscure

The most public death of Marvel's most secretive man was staged by his own favourite technology.

1995
The setup — Spook's doctored evidence turned the Punisher into an assassin aimed at the one man Castle had once served under in uniform.
Omega
The shot — believing Fury was about to harm a civilian, Castle fired into his back, closing the five-part Over the Edge crossover.
Arlington
The funeral — heroes gathered over the coffin and nobody, including Wolverine, spotted that the corpse was machinery.
1998
The reveal — Sharon Carter found the decoy in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody; it briefly reactivated and attacked her before she destroyed it.
