Today's Fact
Fury’s oldest friend offered him a transfusion of youth — and learned he had no blood left to give.
In August 1966, on a top-secret mission to stop Count Otto Vermis from destroying Fort Knox, Dum Dum Dugan was fatally wounded by a ricocheting bullet. The mission was classified, so only one man knew S.H.I.E.L.D. had lost him: Nick Fury. Fury preserved his best friend’s body in suspended animation and projected Dugan’s mind into an advanced Life Model Decoy retrofitted with alien technology, as finally revealed in Original Sins Vol. 1 #5 (2014).
The cover story was elegant: Dugan believed the Infinity Formula — the same serum slowing Fury’s aging — explained why he never grew old either. Whenever a Dugan body was shot, crushed or blown apart in the line of duty, Fury quietly activated a replacement from storage; later counts put the spare bodies at more than a hundred and fifty. For nearly fifty years, every handshake, promotion and battlefield reunion happened with a machine wearing his friend’s face, and only Fury knew.
The truth surfaced when an elderly Fury, his own Infinity Formula spent, received a generous offer: Dugan volunteered his blood for a transfusion. Fury confessed instead, calling Dugan his conscience. Dugan heard something colder — a hairshirt Fury kept wearing so he could still feel human. Programmed so he could not shoot Fury, Dugan turned the pistol on himself and begged not to be rebuilt. Maria Hill rebuilt him anyway. S.H.I.E.L.D. always does.
Why It's Obscure
The Howling Commando’s second life is the longest-running secret Fury ever kept from the man it was about.
