Today's Fact
A year before the Infinity Gauntlet, Nebula held an even older cosmic weapon — and treated reality like a light switch.
In The Avengers Vol. 1 #317–318 (1990), plotted by John Byrne and scripted by Fabian Nicieza, Nebula got her hands on the Infinity Union — three cosmic devices combined into a single power source that channels all ambient energy and can unmake the universe. Her accomplice Gunthar had built her a bio-receiver, an implant in her brain tuned to the Union's frequency, so its power poured directly into her.
This was Nebula before the cybernetics, before the Guardians — a blue-skinned pirate running on nerve and spite — and she used godhood the way she used everything else: theatrically. She killed the Stranger, one of the most powerful beings in existence, and recreated him, repeatedly, as a party trick. She made the entire universe flash in and out of existence while the Avengers watched.
What saved reality was the wiring. The Stranger recognized the bio-receiver for what it was and redirected the Union's energies into himself, cutting Nebula off mid-performance. A year later she would seize the Infinity Gauntlet itself — but the first time Nebula held the power to end everything, she mostly used it to make sure everyone was watching.
Why It's Obscure
Thanos snapped half of life away. Nebula, earlier and pettier, flickered all of it.
