Today's Fact

Nebula arrived in The Avengers #257 (July 1985), by Roger Stern and John Buscema, not as a cyborg assassin but as a blue-skinned space pirate with a stolen fleet. Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau, stranded at the edge of space while testing her light-form range, fell into the hands of the crew holding Sanctuary II — Thanos’s old flagship — and Nebula tried to turn the Avenger into an asset for her real campaign.
That campaign was imperial. Galactus had destroyed the Skrull throneworld, every planetary governor was declaring himself emperor, and Nebula was swallowing the shattered empire world by world from behind a puppet command structure. Rambeau played along just long enough to get a warning out, then helped engineer a ruse that cost Nebula a base and brought the Avengers and General Zedrao’s Skrulls into an alliance against her.
By The Avengers #260, in the assault on Sanctuary II itself, the Avengers were fighting under a cover blazing with the secret of Nebula — the granddaughter claim she had announced to Starfox, Thanos’s own brother, and a claim nobody in the story could verify.
Why It's Obscure
Her opening move was an empire, and her first Avenger said no.
