For a pirate who answered to no one, the strangest entry on Nebula's record is a stretch of voluntary service. In Annihilation: Ronan #2 (2006) she resurfaces as a sworn member of the Graces, an all-woman company of cosmic warriors assembled and commanded by Gamora — the adopted daughter of Thanos, and the closest thing Nebula had to a rival for the Mad Titan's legacy.
The Graces were no support group. Based on the colony world Godthab Omega, they seized control of the planet and held it as their own stronghold, with Nebula serving as one of Gamora's enforcers. When Ronan the Accuser came hunting answers on that world, Nebula fought at the Graces' side and was soundly beaten by the Kree warrior for her trouble.
The arrangement says more about Nebula than any of her solo rampages. The comics' Nebula and Gamora had barely crossed paths before this era — the famous sisterhood is a film invention — so her one real alliance with Gamora was a mercenary oath, not family. When the Annihilation Wave forced every cosmic power into the same war, the Graces fought in the United Front, and Nebula's brief season of taking orders ended with the war.
Why It's Obscure
The galaxy's most insubordinate pirate spent one war as somebody else's soldier — and it was Gamora giving the orders.
