Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
The metal-plated Nebula readers know today is a rebuild, not an original design. When she debuted in Avengers #257 she was entirely organic: a blue-skinned pirate with long dark hair and not a single visible implant. The chrome, the plating and the machinery all arrived later — installed in an operating room she never chose, by a doctor she never should have trusted.
After her season as the Infinity Gauntlet's most disastrous wielder, Nebula was captured and hauled to Titan to stand trial. Her loyal lieutenant Geatar sprang her from that prison, but she came out of it badly injured — hurt enough that survival itself required intervention. Geatar delivered her to Doctor Mandibus, a criminal surgeon with a skull-like face, who converted the pirate into a cyborg in Silver Surfer Vol. 3 #72.
Nebula's gratitude lasted about one mission. Freshly rebuilt, she stormed the Anvil space prison to liberate her old pirate crew — ran into the Silver Surfer mid-break, and, when the escape went sideways, killed her own crew on the way out rather than leave witnesses and debts behind her. The surgery saved her life and changed nothing about her character: Mandibus gave her a metal body, and she immediately used it exactly the way she had used the flesh one.
Why It's Obscure
Every plate and circuit in comics' Nebula traces back to one prison break and one very shady surgeon.
