Today's Fact

When Thanos assembled the Infinity Gauntlet, he kept Nebula beside his throne as an offering to Mistress Death: a burned, catatonic husk, suspended between life and death, displayed precisely because her agony proved his devotion. She could not speak, could barely move — and she was the one person in the universe close enough to end him.
Thanos’ arrogance opened the door. After crushing Earth’s heroes and the cosmic entities, he cast off his physical body to take Eternity’s place as a living abstraction — leaving that body, and the Gauntlet still on its hand, unattended. The forgotten trophy reached out, pulled the Gauntlet free, and used its power to restore her own shattered body in Infinity Gauntlet Vol. 1 #5–6 (1991), by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim.
Nebula, omnipotent and unhinged by torture, banished Thanos into deep space and began remaking reality at whim. It took Thanos himself, rescued by Doctor Strange and coached by Adam Warlock, to undo her: tricked into rewinding the universe by twenty-four hours, she reverted to her ruined state mid-gesture, Warlock slipped through the Soul Gem to break her grip on the Gems, and the pirate who had held all creation lost it to a moment’s distraction.
Why It's Obscure
A torture victim on display at the throne became, for a few pages, the most powerful being in existence.
