Today's Fact
A borrowed face, a stolen laboratory, and a cure that was rebuilt into a weapon pointed the other way.
The Featured FactIn X-Men Vol. 2 #106–108 (2000–2001), Raven Darkhölme reformed her Brotherhood, kidnapped geneticist Dr. Moira MacTaggert, and then simply became her. Wearing Moira’s face, voice and credentials, Mystique walked into the Muir Island research centre and helped herself to years of work on the Legacy Virus, the plague that had been killing mutants across the globe.
What she built from that research inverted its purpose. Mystique reverse-engineered the virus into a strain engineered to attack the human genome, keeping an antidote for her own kind, and then covered her tracks the loud way: she blew up the facility, an explosion that left the real Moira fatally injured, and shot Moira’s foster daughter Wolfsbane with a prototype of Forge’s power-neutralising gun, stripping the young mutant of her abilities.
The bitterest turn is what Moira did with her last strength. She survived the flight back across the Atlantic, passed her research directly into the mind of Charles Xavier, and died in his arms — and historians of the storyline note that Mystique’s tampering had inadvertently handed Moira the very breakthrough her cure needed. Raven had broken into the lab to end humanity; the lab’s final product, finished over Moira’s body, helped end the virus instead. Years later, House of X #2 (2019) revealed the woman who died was a Shi’ar golem, and Moira had staged the whole death to vanish from the board.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of impostor stories end with a stolen password. This one ends with a Nobel-grade laboratory emptied, a plague re-aimed, and a funeral that turned out to be theatre.
