Today's Fact
The perfect infiltrator had one tell no disguise could hide — and the only cure Marvel offered her was dying.
Raven Darkhölme is the closest thing Marvel has to a perfect copy machine. Her metamorphing duplicates a person's face, voice and vocal-cord voiceprint, their retina patterns, and even the fingerprint, palm and skin-pore patterns on their hands. Cameras, scanners and colleagues all say the disguise is the real person. For most of her career, though, one witness could not be fooled: a good nose.
Mystique could not originally duplicate another person's scent. That gap is why heightened-sense hunters like Wolverine and Sabretooth were her natural counter — walk into a room wearing anyone's face you like, and Logan still smelled Raven Darkhölme underneath it. A shapeshifter who could beat a retinal scanner could be unmasked by a man simply breathing in.
The upgrade arrived the hard way. After Wolverine finally killed Mystique in the 'Get Mystique' arc, Wolverine Vol. 3 #62–65 (2008), her body passed to the ninja assassins of the Hand, whose resurrection brought her back enhanced beyond her original limits — now able to mask and alter her scent well enough to fool even Wolverine's nose, alongside new tricks such as tentacle generation and shifting into animal forms. Death did what a century of practice could not: it removed her last tell.
Why It's Obscure
Every infiltrator has a flaw in the paperwork. Mystique's was chemical, invisible, and carried on the air of every room she entered.
