Today's Fact
A dead seer's last instruction turned a seat on the Quiet Council into a lit match.
Destiny — Irene Adler, the blind precognitive who was Mystique's wife and partner for a century — saw Krakoa coming long before she died. In the flashback at the heart of X-Men Vol. 5 #6 (2020), by Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Buffagni, she gives Raven her final orders about the mutant island yet to come: 'There will be an island — not the first, but the last.' Bring me back, she says. And if they will not: 'burn that place to the ground.'
Krakoa's founders knew exactly why Destiny had to stay dead. Moira MacTaggert, whose reincarnation power Destiny had detected across lifetimes, demanded a ban on resurrecting precognitives, and Xavier and Magneto spent the Krakoan era stringing Mystique along — secret missions in exchange for a reunion they never intended to allow, while quietly moving to erase Destiny's stored mind and DNA so resurrection became impossible.
They moved too late. In Inferno Vol. 2 #1 (2021), Destiny walked back into the Quiet Council chamber alive — Mystique had gone around the founders entirely, straight to the Five who perform Krakoa's resurrections, and collected her wife herself. The arson clause never had to be cashed in; the threat, and a dead woman's century-old foresight, were enough.
Why It's Obscure
The founders banned precogs to protect one secret. Mystique simply went and fetched the most dangerous one.
