In the timeline that haunts the X-Men as Earth-811, Mystique did not merely threaten the future — she authored it. Leading a brand-new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Raven Darkhölme ordered the assassination of United States Senator Robert Kelly, Professor X and Moira MacTaggert, and in that world the hit on Kelly succeeded.
The murder detonated everything it was meant to prevent. Kelly’s death inflamed anti-mutant panic, an extremist president took office, the Mutant Control Act passed, and the Sentinel program was unleashed with orders to police, cage and exterminate mutants — a machine tyranny that by 2013 ran North America from internment camps in the Bronx.
That grim account reached the present in Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #141–142 (1981), by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, when the adult Kate Pryde projected her mind into her teenage self to beg the X-Men to save a man who despised them. They did — Kelly lived, and the debuting Destiny, Pyro and Avalanche were beaten — yet the timeline Kate fled was never erased, only branched away, still real somewhere as Earth-811.
