MYSTIQUE AND WOLVERINE SURVIVED A FIRING SQUAD TOGETHER — THEN SHE KICKED HIM OFF A TRAIN!
The Featured Fact

Long before the Brotherhood, the X-Men, or a single blue-skinned portrait, Raven Darkhölme met Wolverine on a firing range — as a fellow condemned prisoner. The “Get Mystique” arc, Wolverine Vol. 3 #62–65 (2008) by Jason Aaron and Ron Garney, flashes back to 1921 Mexico, where Logan and Raven stand blindfolded and tied to posts in the Sonoran Desert while Mexican troops open fire on them both.

Two healing-adjacent survivors are hard to execute. Logan killed the guards, both mutants walked away, and Mystique recruited her new acquaintance into her Kansas City gang for a Federal Reserve bank heist — where the partners became lovers. The romance had an expiry date set by Raven herself: when the job soured, she betrayed Logan and the whole crew, tipped off the police, and kept the money. When he caught up with her on the getaway train and confronted her, she fooled him one last time — and, the moment his back turned, kicked him off the moving train.

The flashbacks run underneath a present-day hunt: after Mystique’s betrayal of the X-Men to the Marauders in Messiah Complex, Cyclops sends Wolverine to kill her, and Logan chases the woman he has known for nearly ninety years across Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. That is why the vendetta in those issues reads less like an assignment than an audit — every disguise she wears is one he has seen her invent, and every escape replays the first lesson she ever taught him: never turn your back on Raven Darkhölme.

Why It's Obscure

Bonnie and Clyde, if Bonnie had done the shooting, the driving, the betraying, and the kicking — and Clyde had the healing factor to survive all four.

1921
First meeting — no gala, no battlefield: a Mexican firing squad, two blindfolded prisoners tied to posts. Logan freed them both and killed the guards, and Raven repaid introductions with a job offer.
Kansas City
The heist — Mystique’s gang, with Logan as its newest recruit, targets the Federal Reserve Bank. Somewhere between casing the vault and the getaway, the partners become lovers.
The double-cross
Raven’s exit strategy — when the robbery collapses, she calls the police on her own crew, keeps the money, and — confronted by Logan on the train — kicks him out of it while it is moving.
2008
Get Mystique — Jason Aaron and Ron Garney’s four-part hunt (Wolverine Vol. 3 #62–65) interleaves the 1921 courtship with Cyclops’ kill order after Messiah Complex.
The desert
How the hunt ends — their final fight leaves Logan with a bullet in the brain and Raven with a mortal wound, left in the desert — a relationship that began in front of rifles ending, fittingly, in gunfire.
