MYSTIQUE INFILTRATED THE X-MEN AS A TEENAGE STUDENT NAMED FOXX!
The Featured Fact

Raven Darkhölme once enrolled at Xavier's school under a shape she invented from scratch: Foxx, a flirtatious teenage mutant student who appeared in X-Men Vol. 2 #163 (2004). Nobody at the school recognised her, because Foxx had no past, no records trail worth checking, and a face Mystique had never worn before.

Her target was not a file or a weapon. Foxx set out to seduce Gambit, hoping to drive a wedge between him and Rogue — Mystique's own foster daughter — because she believed Remy LeBeau was wrong for Rogue and wanted to engineer a different match for her. The infiltration ran for weeks inside the mansion, under the noses of telepaths and teammates who knew Mystique better than almost anyone alive.

When the scheme unravelled, Gambit rejected her, and Mystique dropped the Foxx shape and admitted the whole gambit had been a mother's meddling dressed up as an undercover operation.

Why It's Obscure

Foxx is the hinge — the school admitted a brand-new student who was actually one of its oldest enemies.

Foxx
Most retellings of Mystique joining the X-Men skip the enrolment form entirely, yet Foxx is the hinge: the school admitted a brand-new student who was actually one of its oldest enemies.
The motive
The arc lands differently once you remember her motive was parental, not strategic. She risked blowing a perfect deep-cover identity just to interfere in her daughter's love life.
