XAVIER HIRED MYSTIQUE AS HIS SECRET SPY — AFTER SAVING HER FROM EXECUTION!
The Featured Fact

In Mystique #1–3 (2003), by Brian K. Vaughan, Professor X is running black-ops missions he cannot send the X-Men on. When his operative Prudence is murdered, Xavier and Forge track down the one person who can finish her mission: Raven Darkhölme — found on the brink of being executed for her terrorist crimes. They free her, and force her to work as Xavier's deniable secret agent.

Forge played Q to her Bond, building her mission tech, while a diminutive mutant handler named Shortpack ran her operations. Mystique handled her first missions in a pointedly non-lethal way — and hated how much the arrangement worked. The world's most notorious shapeshifting assassin spent a whole solo series taking orders from the man she had spent decades opposing.

It could never last. Mystique began double-dealing for the mysterious Quiet Man — secretly the merged Prudence and her killer, Steinbeck — who ordered her to assassinate Xavier in exchange for her freedom. In Mystique #23–24, she appeared to threaten Xavier's life on Genosha while actually working with Fantomex to fool Prudence — then took Xavier and Forge's tracking equipment and won her freedom for real.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows Mystique as a Brotherhood villain and anti-hero. Almost nobody remembers the two years Marvel published her as a James Bond figure — blackmailed, handled, and gadget-supplied by Xavier himself.

2003
Mystique #1 — the rescue — Xavier confides in Forge about his black-op mutant spies; together they free Mystique at the point of execution and press her into service. The leverage was simple: work, or be handed back.
Bond
The spy setup — Forge builds the tech, Shortpack handles the missions, and Mystique does work the X-Men must never be connected to. Xavier needed an operative he could burn and disavow.
#10–12
Forge cares anyway — Impressed by her restraint, Forge invites Mystique for coffee; the awkward date becomes a rescue of a mutant boy who turns out to be the telepathic abductor himself. Even her handler couldn't decide if she was villain or asset.
#23–24
The double-cross pays off — Ordered by the Quiet Man to kill Xavier, Mystique stages the threat, helps defeat Prudence/Steinbeck with Fantomex, and steals the tracking tech. She ends the series exactly as she began it: nobody's agent but her own.
