MR. SINISTER

Today's Fact

A concentration camp for mutants had a rescue worker on staff. His name tag was fake, and the rescue route ended on his operating table.

SINISTER POSED AS WEAPON X'S OWN SCIENTIST 'DR. ROBERT WINDSOR' — AND 'RESCUED' NEVERLAND'S PRISONERS STRAIGHT INTO HIS OWN LAB!
The Featured Fact

When director Malcolm Colcord rebuilt the Weapon X program, its sorting facility was Neverland — a concentration camp where captured mutants were judged useful or disposable. Working inside the camp, apparently on the side of the jailers, was its mild-mannered head scientist, Dr. Robert Windsor. Windsor did not exist. Behind the name and the lab coat stood Nathaniel Essex, and almost nobody on the staff knew it.

Windsor built his cover on a promise: he claimed to be quietly helping prisoners escape Neverland before the program could use or kill them. Some mutants did vanish from the camp under his protection. They had not been freed. Essex was diverting the escapees into his own hands as fresh material for his private experiments, running a second, secret laboratory fed directly by the camp that thought it employed him.

The deepest irony is archival. Marvel's own Weapon X history traces the whole Weapon Plus lineage back to Essex's recovered wartime research — the program was built on Sinister's notes before he ever walked into it. The one insider who saw through the Windsor disguise was Sabretooth, who kept the secret to himself, while Essex's old Marauder Scalphunter stood nearby as his bodyguard.

Why It's Obscure

Infiltrators usually sneak into enemy headquarters. Essex took a salaried job inside a machine his own research had invented.

2002
The Windsor years — Sinister surfaces inside the relaunched Weapon X series as Dr. Robert Windsor, experimenting on mutants from within the program itself.
THE CAMP
Neverland — Colcord's facility sorted captive mutants into staff, soldiers and the condemned; Windsor's desk sat at the exact point where those fates were decided.
ONE WITNESS
Sabretooth knew — of everyone at Neverland, only Victor Creed recognized the head scientist, and a secret that valuable was worth more to him unspoken.
FAMILY BUSINESS
Built on his homework — Weapon Plus grew out of Sinister's recovered Second World War research, so the Windsor job was less an infiltration than a homecoming.
