Today's Fact

In 1944 Sinister built a better Sub-Mariner in a tank. It took one ordinary soldier with a shield to fail the product launch.

SINISTER CLONED NAMOR IN A NAZI CAMP IN 1944 — AND CAPTAIN AMERICA BEAT THE CLONE SINGLE-HANDED!
The Featured Fact

In Weapon X Vol. 2 #14 (2003), a 1944 flashback finds Nathaniel Essex working inside a Nazi concentration camp under the guise of a German doctor. When Namor the Sub-Mariner erupts from the sea nearby, Essex recognizes a human-Atlantean hybrid mutant on sight — and carefully collects the prince's blood from a scratch, using a shard of glass and a test tube.

In his hidden laboratory Essex grew that sample into Experiment N2, a red-eyed clone of Namor kept floating in a tank of red liquid. Woken by the alarm as Namor and the android Human Torch liberated the camp's prisoners, N2 attacked its own original: it seized Namor by the throat and sucked the water out of his body, then blasted the Torch's flame out with a jet of water. Clone 1, originals 0.

Then Captain America walked in. Essex, watching from the lab, rated the contest a formality — one baseline human against a hybrid powerhouse. Instead Cap dodged every blast and punch and landed blow after blow until N2 was unconscious on the floor. Essex's own recorded lesson from the day is the most honest sentence he ever produced: never underestimate the unexpected.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone files N2 under forgotten clones. It deserves better: it is the day Sinister's perfect science lost to a man with no powers at all.

1944
A blood sample, stolen politely — Essex did not fight Namor or bargain with him; he waited, watched, and scraped the prince's blood off broken glass like a man collecting dew.
Experiment N2
Built to beat two Invaders — The clone was engineered past its original: it drained Namor's water and doused the Human Torch, winning both matchups it was designed for.
The upset
Shield beats specimen — Captain America had no hybrid physiology, no water powers and no tank. He won on timing and nerve, which do not appear on any of Sinister's charts.
Weapon X #14 · 2003
A flashback with a moral — The story frames the camp raid through Essex's own hindsight, and his takeaway — never underestimate the unexpected — is a confession his later clone armies kept ignoring.
