SINISTER'S MARAUDERS ARE DISPOSABLE BY DESIGN — EVERY CLONE CARRIES A GENETIC KILL-SWITCH, AND ONLY SABRETOOTH WAS EVER THE ORIGINAL!
The Featured Fact

The Marauders have an attrition problem that never sticks. Members cut down during the Mutant Massacre — Riptide, Prism, Blockbuster — were back on the roster soon after, because Mister Sinister keeps his assassins the way careful men keep backups: as genetic stock in his cloning facilities, ready to be regrown. The arrangement surfaced in X-Men Vol. 2 #34 (1994), when the X-Men breached one such facility and found Marauder cloning material waiting in the vats — plus a malfunction that released a half-finished Sabretooth clone and a fresh Riptide on them.

The detail that turns a cloning programme into something colder came from Scalphunter, the Marauders' own field leader, in conversation with Gambit: of the entire team, only one member had never been cloned at all — Sabretooth. Everyone else on the roster was a copy of a copy, and every copy carried gene imprints written into its code that would shut the clone down if it ever turned against Sinister.

Consider what that does to an organisation. Loyalty in the Marauders is not recruited, rewarded, or even threatened into place — it is compiled into the product at manufacture, with a fatal error state for treason. Sinister can spend his soldiers freely, resurrect the useful ones, and sleep soundly above the vats, knowing the one employee he cannot replace is also the one he never managed to copy properly.

Why It's Obscure

An assassin squad with a print queue, a built-in off-switch, and exactly one irreplaceable employee.

Massacre
The losses — Riptide, Prism and Blockbuster die in the Morlock tunnels and are quietly back at work soon after; nobody at the time asks how.
The vats
The answer — X-Men #34 (1994) finds Sinister's cloning stock mid-production, and a glitch briefly turns a half-finished Sabretooth loose on the intruders.
The exception
Original issue — Scalphunter's census is blunt: Sabretooth is the sole Marauder who was never a clone. The rest are reprints.
The leash
Terms of service — a cloned Marauder who raises a hand against its maker triggers its own shutdown imprint. Resignation is not an available option.
Gambit
The audience — the man hearing all this is Gambit, who once led the Marauders to the Morlocks himself; Sinister's HR file on him writes its own blackmail.
