SINISTER RAN CYCLOPS' ORPHANAGE — AND POSED AS HIS CHILDHOOD BULLY!
The Featured Fact

Cyclops thought his childhood was merely tragic. It was actually supervised. After the plane crash that orphaned Scott and Alex Summers, Scott landed in the State Home for Foundlings in Omaha, Nebraska — an orphanage secretly opened and run by Nathaniel Essex, Mr. Sinister, as a front for experimenting on the mutant genome, with a laboratory hidden underneath. Above ground: an orphanage. Below: Sinister's lab, complete with mutant children kept in cryogenic sleep.

And Essex did not supervise from a distance. He played every part himself: as Michael Milbury he was the head of the orphanage; as Nathan Masters he was its chief doctor; and as “Lefty” — Nate — he shrank himself into a fellow orphan who bullied Scott relentlessly. He even killed Scott's prospective foster parents before they could adopt him, and brainwashed the one kind doctor, Robyn Hanover, into coldness — engineering Scott's loneliness like a lab condition.

The cruelest detail came out in X-Factor #39 (1989), when Sinister finally told Scott the truth to his face: the orphanage headaches Scott blamed on his fall were Sinister's doing — he had placed blocks on Scott's mind to control his emerging optic blasts, buried the truth so deeply no telepath would suspect, and when Scott never learned control, resorted to physical controls: the ruby-quartz glasses. The most famous eyewear in comics exists because Sinister's mental blocks failed.

Why It's Obscure

Scott Summers' worst childhood memories — the bully, the headaches, the loneliness — were one man in three disguises, running an experiment. The bully's name should have been a clue: Nate.

Omaha
The State Home for Foundlings — Sinister opened the orphanage to experiment on the mutant genome while building a weapon against Apocalypse. Scott and Alex were placed there and subjected to tests and experiments.
3 roles
Milbury the administrator, Nathan Masters the chief doctor, and Lefty/Nate the bully roommate — all Essex. He tormented Scott as Lefty and killed his potential foster parents before they could adopt him.
1989
Classic X-Men #41–42 (Claremont & Collins) — the orphanage stories first expose the disguises: the boy Nate who bullied Scott was Sinister himself, running the orphanage.
1989
X-Factor #39 — Sinister confesses: he blocked Scott's powers, buried the memory, and resorted to ruby-quartz glasses when the blocks were not enough. It is also where he identified the Summers/Grey union as his great experiment — and built Madelyne Pryor, Jean's clone.
