HIS WIFE'S DYING WORD BECAME HIS NAME!
The Featured Fact

Nathaniel Essex was a Victorian biologist whose four-year-old son Adam died of birth defects — and the grief hardened into a theory: humanity was mutating through what he called “Essex factors” in the genome, and science, he argued, was beyond morality. The Royal Society was horrified, mocked him, and ousted him. Essex hired thugs — his first Marauders — to kidnap Londoners off the street for experiments. He even dug up his dead son and experimented on him.

His wife Rebecca discovered the horrors. The stress killed her — she miscarried their second child — and her last word to him was “Sinister.” Then the immortal mutant En Sabah Nur — Apocalypse — offered an alliance, and his technology transformed Essex into an ageless being with chalk-white skin. Essex shed his old identity and took her word as his name.

Readers waited nearly a decade to learn any of this. Sinister debuted as an enigma in Uncanny X-Men #221 (1987), employer of the Marauders who massacred the Morlocks. Only in The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix (1996), with Scott Summers and Jean Grey time-traveling to 1859, did the origin come out — and that meeting with the Summers and Grey bloodlines in 1859 is what started his century-long obsession with their DNA.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody knows the white skin and the red diamond. Almost nobody knows the name came from his wife's deathbed — or that he dug up his own dead son to keep experimenting.

1859
Nathaniel Essex, Darwin's contemporary — Oxford biologist, married to Rebecca, convinced humanity was mutating via “Essex factors.” After Adam's death at four, his methods turn monstrous: kidnapped test subjects, grave-robbing, and finally ouster from the Royal Society. Science beyond morality, he said.
Rebecca
His wife discovers the horrors — the stress kills her and causes her to miscarry their unnamed second child. Her last word to him is “Sinister.” He takes it as his name. The worst possible review, kept forever.
1987
Uncanny X-Men #221 (Claremont & Silvestri) — Sinister debuts as a mystery: employer of the Marauders, fresh from the Morlock Massacre. No origin, no real name, just the diamond and the plan.
1996
The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix — Scott and Jean travel to 1859 and meet Essex as he takes Apocalypse's bargain. The encounter also explains the obsession: he met the Summers and Grey bloodlines a century early — and never let go.
