Today's Fact

She died for him, was raised for him, and finally remade herself for him. The last gift Michael Morbius ever gave Martine Bancroft was an ending.

MORBIUS'S FIANCÉE MADE HERSELF A TRUE VAMPIRE TO LOVE HIM FOREVER — SO HE PUT THE STAKE THROUGH HER HEART HIMSELF!
The Featured Fact

Martine Bancroft's devotion survived everything Morbius became: the transformation, the victims, her own murder, even a resurrection worked from a page of the Darkhold that returned her without her emotions. Denied peace and denied him, she chose the one eternity still on offer — she had herself made a true, undead vampire, so that she and Michael could finally be the same kind of creature.

In The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #622 (2010), Martine used Peter Parker to reach Morbius's lair and presented the future she had bought: she would turn Morbius into a true vampire as well, and neither of them would age, sicken or be parted again. Morbius refused the reading of it. What was speaking, he told her, was not love but the void where her soul used to be.

When Martine turned on Spider-Man, Morbius made the choice the hero could not: as Peter hesitated over a length of broken wood, Morbius drove Martine onto the stake, and afterwards scattered her ashes himself. The man who became a monster because he could not accept dying closed the story of the woman who became one because she could not accept losing him.

Why It's Obscure

Morbius has spent fifty years as the monster who regrets. This is the one killing the regret is really about — performed as an act of mercy, with witnesses, on the woman he was going to marry.

The Darkhold page
Resurrection with a piece missing — Morbius raised Martine with a page of the Darkhold; a Lilin called Parasite rode back with her, and the woman who remained afterwards felt nothing at all.
The Eternal club
Where she found Parker — undead and hunting a way in, Martine crossed paths with Peter Parker among a club of vampire wannabes and used him as her invitation into Morbius's home.
The refusal
Love, or the void talking — Morbius insisted her devotion was a longing for completion rather than love, and would not let her make him what she had become.
Ashes
The final housekeeping — after the stake, Morbius scattered Martine's ashes himself, closing her story in the one way no further resurrection could easily reopen.
