KHONSHU POSSESSED MOON KNIGHT TO JOIN THE WEST COAST AVENGERS HIMSELF — WHEN THE GOD LEFT, MARC QUIT THE TEAM!
The Featured Fact

Moon Knight's strangest Avengers tenure was not really his. In West Coast Avengers Vol. 1 #21 (1987), Khonshu contacted his fist directly — Spector had only recently accepted the moon god was real — and steered him to the West Coast Avengers' compound carrying a message from the time-lost Hawkeye. Moon Knight stayed, fought beside the team, and eventually took a roster spot that puzzled everyone who knew the solitary New York vigilante.

The explanation, when it surfaced in West Coast Avengers Vol. 1 #41 (1988), was that the roster spot had never been Marc's idea. Khonshu had wanted to experience the Avengers for himself, and had taken control of his avatar's body to do it — guiding Moon Knight's choices from inside for the length of the membership, a god quietly wearing his own chosen warrior to team meetings.

When Khonshu relinquished control, Spector did the arithmetic and resigned, dropping to reserve status. The arrangement's absurd footnote came later: still holding his Avengers credentials, he used them to walk into a consulate and fight Doctor Doom, drawing official complaints from the very team his god had been so eager to join. The West Coast Avengers' most devout member, it turned out, had been the deity in the back seat.

Why It's Obscure

Teams screen their recruits for powers, records and temperament. Nobody screened this one for a passenger.

1987

The tenure
A god at the meetings — Khonshu, intrigued by the team, rides inside his avatar through Moon Knight's whole West Coast Avengers membership.
1988
The reveal in #41 — West Coast Avengers #41 resolves the storyline by exposing how much of the membership was Khonshu's control rather than Marc's choice.
The exit
